Harispattuwa Divisional Secretariat

Located to the west and northwest of the historic hill country Kandy District, the Harispattuwa Divisional Secretariat can be identified as one of the largest Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the district. It is bordered by the Pujapitiya Divisional Secretariat to the north, the Pinga-Oya area to the northeast, the Gangawatakorale Divisional Secretariat to the southeast, the Yatinuwara Divisional Secretariat to the southwest, and the Hatharaliyadda Divisional Secretariat to the northwest. The total land area of this division is 59.04 square kilometers.

The Harispattuwa area generally has the characteristics of a plain. However, small hills can be seen here and there, and the area receives rainfall throughout the year from the southwest monsoon and inter-monsoon periods. A branched drainage pattern is also visible in the area. There are several small valleys through which water flows across the region and eventually joins the Mahaweli River.

Various types of soil can be found within the area. The most commonly found soil type is red-brown laterite soil. Overall, the area has fertile soil that is suitable for the cultivation of minor export crops. Due to the constant moisture in the soil, good plant growth can also be observed.

There are 84 Grama Niladhari divisions in this area, with a total population of 101,739. The female population is 52,624, while the male population is 49,115. The majority of the population is Sinhalese, but families belonging to Tamil, Muslim, and Burgher ethnic groups also live within this division. The main economic activity is agriculture. In addition, due to its proximity to the cities of Kandy and Katugastota, as well as the main Kandy-Kurunegala road passing through it, Harispattuwa has acquired a semi-urban character. The main commercial crops cultivated include cloves, nutmeg, pepper, and other minor export crops. There are no significant industrial activities in the area. Therefore, this region is a rural area with a gentle climate, rich natural beauty, and abundant resources.

Historical Information

According to historical records, the area known as Harispattuwa, located in the Kandy District of the Central Province, has a history that dates back to the Anuradhapura period. The name "Harispattuwa" is also believed to have originated during the Anuradhapura era, as mentioned in the "Pali Bodhi Vamsa Getapada Vivaranaya" text. In the story of Dumindagamana found in this text, it is stated that King Devanampiyatissa granted the title of "Lakmaharathi" and a village, referred to as Chatusiriya Bhumiya (land with four borders), to Prince Devagotta. Accordingly, it is mentioned in history that this area came to be known as "Harispattuwa."

Furthermore, Katarangala Viharaya can be identified as a site that vividly reflects the historical significance of Harispattuwa. It is believed that this temple was established either during the Polonnaruwa period or the Anuradhapura period. Some historical records suggest that it was founded by King Valagamba. It is also mentioned that the king, having fled from the Chola invaders, sought refuge at this very site for a certain period.

The temple houses a sacred bronze Buddha statue weighing approximately 80 pounds. The history of this statue is believed to date back to the time of the Buddha himself. According to historical accounts, the statue was crafted in India using gold that was originally utilized to enshrine the relics of the Buddha after his Parinirvana. Four such statues were created, and this particular statue is said to have been brought to Sri Lanka by Arahant Maliyadeva. It is believed that during that time, for the purpose of safeguarding the statue, it was enshrined at the Katarangala Raja Maha Viharaya, as stated in local folklore.

During the period of British colonial rule, it is recorded that the Harispattuwa region was divided into several administrative zones. These zones were named as follows:

  • Kulugammana Siyapattuwa
  • Meda Siyapattuwa
  • Gala Siyapattuwa
  • Udagampaha
  • Pallegampaha

It is also mentioned in folklore that in ancient times, Harispattuwa was referred to by the name "Balavita", signifying a region populated by soldiers. This suggests that Harispattuwa was not only a land of artists and craftsmen but also a territory inhabited by warriors, highlighting its dual significance in both artistic and military aspects.
